BAABA COMMEMORATED AS A UN MDG ENVOY FOR AFRICA |
We are proud to announce that Baaba has been awarded a position as a UN envoy for their Millennium Development Goals advocacy program. This coincides with the launch of a new track '8 Goals for Africa' which will be launched tonight at a special event in Alexandra Township in Johannesburg. The track in intended as the UN campaign song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup and is performed by eight African artists including Eric Wainaina, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Angelique Kidjo and Oliver Mtukudzi, as well as Baaba Maal. It encourages commitment to the achievement of the MDGs - eight internationally-agreed goals to alleviate poverty - and is part of the global UN MDGs campaign in preparation for the world leaders' MDGs New York summit in September. All the artists involved in the track have been invited to perform the song live in Soweto on the afternoon of the FIFA Word Cup final on June 12th.
Baaba had this to say about it: "I am so happy to be involved in the UN's MDG campaign and to share this honour with all the other musicians in this project. It's great that the United Nations has recognised the roll that music and culture can play in promoting positive change in society and to place this trust in us. I am sure it will be a great success and that the song will touch many people."

| BAABA AT THE ATLANTIC COUNCIL |
|
On April 28th Baaba attended and performed at the 2010 Atlantic Council Awards Dinner in Washington DC. He was invited by Bono's advocacy organisation - One - and joined many notable guests including President Bill Clinton, Josef Ackerman, Jim Mattis, Stéphane Abrial and Bono himself, who was the recipient of an award for his humanitarian leadership.
Baaba performed Baayo and was followed on-stage by President Bill Clinton, who had just presented Baaba with a gift back-stage - a photo from the time he visited Senegal and was presented with a goat!
Baaba said this about the event:
"I want to congratulate all the winners of the 2010 Atlantic Council for their awards last night especially my friend Bono and President Bill Clinton who by the way gave me a great photograph of his first visit to Senegal. President Clinton has worked hard for Africa for a long time. In March Bono and the One organisation made a trip to Africa to visit several countries. It was the right thing to do at this time and involve African people to collaborate with them in Bono's fight for justice. All people should be equal."
